Balfour Special Tutorial
Mission Statement: Special Tutorial is a caring, trusting, supportive environment for pregnant and parenting teens in pursuit of education, self-esteem and life long learning.
Balfour Special Tutorial was established in 1972 and the Mackenzie Infant Care Centre was established in 1986.
What is the Special Tutorial Class?
This school facility for pregnant and parenting young women is provided so each student may continue her education and receive counseling and support services in an atmosphere of warmth and understanding. This program is operated by the Regina Public School System on a semester basis. Students may transfer into the program anytime during the school year.
The program is administered and coordinated by Balfour Collegiate administration team and Nancy Felstrom, the Program Co-ordinator. Instruction is provided by a complement of three professional teachers. The curriculum includes:

Math Life Transitions Law Visual Art
Wellness (Prenatal) Modified Programming
as well as access to all the courses offered in the main Balfour Collegiate program.
Students from grades 9 - 12 receive individualized and group instruction in academic and alternate education programs according to the Saskatchewan curriculum. Detailed program information is available upon request.
Support Services
Health: A Regina Public Health nurse is on site four half days providing pre and post natal child care instruction, smoking cessation programs, individual health counseling, pregnancy testing, birth control counseling, referrals, disease follow-up and home visits. A Planned Parenthood sexual health nurse is on site one half day per week providing resources in all areas of sexual health including pregnancy tests, birth control and referrals to outside agencies.
Teen Parent Program: A social worker is available 3 days per week to provide support and counseling services to students with personal matters, school difficulties, mental health issues, and referrals to outside agencies. In addition, we offer a comprehensive support and treatment program for teenage victims of dating abuse through Family Service Regina's "When Love Hurts" program.
Food for Learning: Nutritious food from the four food groups is provided free of charge by the Regina Food For Learning Program, three times per week. The food is prepared by volunteer students, mentored by a staff member of the Special Tutorial Program.
Daycare: The Mackenzie Infant Care Centre has two locations, in and close to the school, to provide consistent and affordable day care for children of Special Tutorial students. The Centre accepts children from two weeks to eighteen months of age.
