Balfour Beacon ... March 2014

In an effort to recognize the outstanding individuals that we have at Balfour Collegiate, we are going to embark upon recognition of these individuals.  The word ‘Beacon’ has long been associated with the bright light that stands out, that leads and guides, and is something to which many are drawn.  These are the exact characteristics we are attempting to showcase through the Balfour Beacons.

Andy Tran - Grade 9

Balfour is so full of life and passion, in the teachers, students, and rich learning environment. Although I am a bit shy, the students are very friendly, accepting, and especially passionate. The teachers here have fun with their students and really try to connect, encouraging us to strive for our best and reach higher. One of my favorite things about Balfour is the choice and variety offered through the many classes and extracurricular programs, like the Arts Programs, clubs, or sports. It helps me to pursue my dreams, try new things, find a new hobby, but also develop an appreciation for learning. No matter who you are, outgoing or shy, Balfour is no doubt accepting and welcoming of you.

Brittney Leitner - Grade 10

My Balfour experience has been really great so far. I love that all the teachers know who you are and genuinely care about you. I have been able to be involved in many different clubs and activities and even just help around the school. This has made me discover new passions and meet some really awesome people. All the students and staff at Balfour are really nice and supportive. Everyone has a place in our school community. I also really love the class choices at Balfour because I have been able to take classes that interest and challenge me. Balfour has become a second home to me. At Balfour we have people from all different backgrounds and each person’s story is different. Balfour brings everyone together no matter where they came from. We are all Balfour Redmen and I am proud to call Balfour my school.

Kaitlyn Budzak - Grade 12

Being a Balfour student means much more than wearing red on spirit days, or screaming “GO REDMEN” at the top of my lungs alongside my fellow classmates in the final minutes of a nail-biting city final game. As I’m currently in my last leg of being a student at Balfour Collegiate, I am looking ahead and planning my future endeavors.  This planning has forced me to look back on the last 4 years spent defining my high school education.  Because I have no older siblings that had influence on my decision when choosing a high school, Balfour became my choice due to the fact that it was many of my friends’ choice, and it felt like home as soon as I walked through those big wooden front doors.  Balfour is rich in academics, sports, history and culture, and I believe all of these aspects play crucial roles in the legacy this school.  The beauty of our school comes with the support and guidance of our parents and teachers, counselors and coaches, and the overall inspiration from the entire school community.  Balfour has been a place for me to create and dream, to academically excel, and to build relationships that will last a lifetime.  It has been an honor and pleasure to spend my high school career surrounded and encouraged by a community of people who believe in the power of education, as well as the rewards that come from dedication and hard work.  I am excited to dive into the future adventures, travels and experiences that “the real world” has for me outside of high school.  However, as long as I live and wherever I go, Balfour Collegiate will always hold a special place in my heart.

Shaylene Keller - Grade 12
