Balfour Beacon ... January 2014

In an effort to recognize the outstanding individuals that we have at Balfour Collegiate, we are going to embark upon recognition of these individuals.  The word ‘Beacon’ has long been associated with the bright light that stands out, that leads and guides, and is something to which many are drawn.  These are the exact characteristics we are attempting to showcase through the Balfour Beacons.

Joy-Lyn Reimer - Grade 9

Being a Balfour student is a privilege I embrace every day. Right from my first day I knew this is where I belonged. I feel connected to the school as a whole and accepted by my classmates and teachers. I know Balfour is a place where I can be myself and still fit in. The teachers here go out of their way and take the time to make sure students feel valued. There are so many ways to get involved and contribute to the school spirit. The diversity of clubs, teams and extra-curricular activities makes it possible for anyone with any interest to enjoy their school experience. These are some of the reasons that make Balfour a great place to come to school every day. I am thrilled to be spending the next 4 years of my life at a school that models these types of values. I am so blessed and proud to be a member of the Balfour Redmen.

Taylor Balfour - Grade 10

Being a Balfour student to me, means everything. Not only is the school named after one of my ancestors, but this is also the school where one of my grandmothers went where she was in high school. Balfour is a school that encourages my goals and dreams and helps me achieve my dream career. Thanks to the commitment from the staff here at Balfour I'm able to do the extra-curricular activities I like, no matter how different they might be. I'm able to be on stage and act, while also being able to write and author my own stories. Thanks to Balfour Collegiate, my future is looking brighter than ever.

Riley Orchard - Grade 11

What it means to be a Balfour student.... To me you can answer this question in many ways!  Striving for perfection is a well-known trait of Balfour from our academics to our athletics all the way to our extremely friendly students.  At Balfour we tend to have a lot of fun while we do our work because our teachers set up plans for us to enjoy what we are doing.  I learn a lot more because I enjoy doing it here at Balfour.  I also notice a lot of passion throughout Balfour.  The teachers and students show this through things like sporting events, musicals and even our potlucks!   Balfour also has enough people for the opportunity to make lots of friends but not too many people that you feel overwhelmed.  This factor also contributes to our athletic teams; if you put the effort in, it is easy to make the majority of our teams and we still compete with larger schools.  In my opinion Balfour is flat out amazing and I would choose it over any school in Regina.

Sam Darwish - Grade 11

Balfour Collegiate is a welcoming school with extremely kind, helpful and easygoing students. Adapting to this school was less challenging due to the help of considerate teachers and supportive students. I was easily able to make friends through the various athletic teams I participated with. I really admire the diverse groups of students at Balfour because I can be friends with kids of different backgrounds and personalities. Diversity helps enlarge my perspective and creates open-mindedness, which even makes the time outside of class, spent with my friends a learning experience. Energetic, passionate and committed are words that describe the teachers who help make this school a positive learning environment. I recommend to any student having a bad day to talk to any of the staff members because they truly have the power to brighten your day with just their smile. Balfour offers a variety of extracurricular programs in which you can excel at but it’s our responsibility as students to take advantage of the opportunities present and make it happen. I’m truly blessed to have such amazing teachers and friends; I can’t imagine attending a more beneficial high school. Balfour Collegiate is a welcoming school with extremely kind, helpful and easygoing students. Adapting here during my first two weeks wasn’t challenging due to the help of considerate teachers and supportive students. I was easily able to make friends through the various sport teams I participated in. Thankfully, I feel that I made the best decision for me and I am proud to be a Balfour Redman!
