Fighting
Disputes between members of the school community should be resolved through proper channels. Pushing, shoving, wrestling, etc. will be considered as fighting regardless of the intent. If you are involved in a fight you should be prepared to receive a school suspension.
Alcohol or Illegal Drugs
Using, purchasing, possessing, selling, distributing, or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be tolerated. Students who violate this policy will be suspended and referred to the resource officer and the guidance counsellors.
INTIMIDATION/BULLYING/HAZING
Every member of the school community is entitled to attend school free from harassment, threats or fear. Bullying, intimidation or hazing will not be tolerated. Such actions will result in at least a three day suspension up to a ten day suspension. WE DO NOT SUPPORT OR HOST ANY ACTIVITIES TRADITIONALLY ASSOCIATED WITH FRESHIE WEEK.
CELL PHONE POLICY
Cell phones, or any other form of electronic communication device, are not permitted in classrooms. If it is brought to class the teacher may confiscate it and return it to your parent/guardian. Also we would ask that as an anti-bullying initiative, no camera cell phone pictures be taken on school property.
LOCKERS
Each student will choose a hall locker which must be locked with a school lock. Do not leave valuables in lockers. Report faulty lockers to the main office immediately. The school is not responsible for articles lost from lockers. Be certain all personal possessions and school books are labeled with each student’s name. Please keep all lockers clean and tidy. Use school locks only.
Gym lockers are available during physical education.
Stay away from both hall and gym lockers during class time. The noise may disturb classroom lessons.
STUDENT PARKING
The lot on the west side of the school is provided for students to park vehicles that have been registered with the office. No sticker is required for the vehicle. Students must register in order that drivers and vehicles can be found for emergency, accidents, etc. Students should avoid parking on city streets as well as any other locations on school properly. Improperly parked vehicles may be ticketed by the City Police or towed at the owner’s expense.
STUDENT DROP OFF AND PICK-UP
Parents are requested to drop off and pick-up their children at the front of the school, not in the staff parking lot or the driveway on the east side of the school.
UNASSIGNED TIME
Each Grade 9 and 10 student is scheduled for 5 periods per day. In Grades 11 and 12, one period per day may be unscheduled. During this time (a “spare”), students may visit in Mutch Hall or the Library. Stay out of the halls and the parking lot. A student may leave the school during an unassigned period.
SCHOOL PROPERTY
Each student is responsible for any damage to the school or its contents. Take care of the school. Use garbage receptacles provided both inside and outside the building. With your help Balfour will continue to be one of the most attractive public buildings in Regina.
TOBACCO/SMOKING
Students may not smoke in the school or on school grounds. The school premises are defined as the school building, parking lots, and the school grounds.
NOON HOUR
The Multi-Purpose area, Mutch Hall, the gym, the guidance area and the library are open to students. There are teachers who act as noon supervisors from whom students may seek assistance. The office is open during the lunch hour.
SCHOOL DRESS
Clothing with pictures, words or logos that depict alcohol or drugs, or display offensive messages are inappropriate for school. Students will be asked to go home and change, or turn the clothing inside-out if going home is not possible. Clothing that is too revealing is inappropriate for school. This includes clothing that reveals the midriff, and chest. Tube tops, pants that are too low-rise or hanging below undergarments, or skirts and shorts that are too short are also inappropriate.
While these guidelines are subjective, we believe that common sense will help govern decisions about appropriate clothing choices. As well, these guidelines will teach that some clothing is appropriate for home and recreational wear, but not for school or business wear.
NO BANDANAS ARE ALLOWED TO BE WORN AT ANY TIME.
Good taste, simplicity, cleanliness and tidiness are the main concerns for students’ clothing at Balfour Collegiate. One’s apparel should not be distracting or hinder the learning process in the classroom. Thank you for understanding in this matter.
SCHOOL DANCES
Dances are supervised by the SRC, staff members, and parents. Admission is restricted to Balfour students and approved guests.
STUDENT SERVICES
The primary purpose of Student Services is to provide assistance for students at Balfour. By attempting to meet our students’ educational, personal, social and career awareness needs we hope our students will be better equipped to maximize their potential. The goal of our department is to offer services and programs designed to support the positive growth of students. In order to accomplish this the thrust of programs is proactive in nature.
SCHOLARSHIPS
There are thousands of potential scholarships and awards available. Students are encouraged to begin the process of searching and applying for scholarships by the end of grade eleven or at the beginning of their grade twelve year. There is information on how to apply for scholarships, as well as links to scholarships search websites, under the “Guidance” link on the Balfour Collegiate website (balfourcollegiate.rbe.sk.ca). Graduating students are encouraged to apply for Balfour Collegiate scholarships which are only available to Balfour students. Application forms will be available in February of each year. Guidance Counsellors are available to assist with applications, transcripts, reference letters and scholarship questions.
THE RESOURCE CENTER

Books and magazines may be signed out from the library for a period of two weeks. Items may be renewed as needed. Reference books (encyclopedias, dictionaries, yearbooks, etc.) do not circulate without the Librarian’s permission. Holds may be placed on popular items. The library contains a mini computer lab with Internet access and on-line research database access.

The Driver Education program consists of thirty hours of classroom instruction and six hours of driving time. Classes are taught after school, and the in-car phase is conducted during the school day. Registration for the program is held at the beginning of the school year. Completed applications may be returned at any time to the main office.
SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
ACTIVITY CARD
The purchaser of an activity card, which costs $17.00, is entitled to admittance to more than $50.00 worth of school events. These events include all regular season football games, all other home game regular season athletic events, and half-price admission to all drama and music events. Card holders also receive special discounts during the year. Buy in September; save money and participate.
ACTIVITIES
All students are encouraged to join a club, try out for a team, or participate in any music, athletic, drama, or social activity. Each activity has a teacher advisor, director, or coach. Many of these activities will be promoted during the Welcome Week, when students will have an opportunity to join. Activities that are run later in the school year will be publicized at the time they are organized. New activities can be organized if there is sufficient student interest and if an advisor is available.
Activities are organized for the purpose of giving students an opportunity to get involved in the total life of our school and to pursue particular interests beyond the classroom. By joining an activity, students gain several benefits. They become acquainted with each other, they receive special suggestions and training from the advisors, and they receive valuable experience in assisting with the organization of these activities.
Intramural sports activities are organized at various times of the year. Check with the Phys Ed Department for details.
The daily announcements will provide details of these activities. Here is a partial list of activities. Ask your teachers for further information.
